Sensory rooms for regulation

This week (Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24 November) Experia will be travelling to the OT Show in Birmingham - the UK's largest dedicated event just for occupational therapists.

We will be teaming up with renowned occupational therapists Sheena Hardwick and Maxine Bell from Sherwood Therapy Services to provide a series of three CPD-accredited seminars running each day during the show.

Here Sheena provides a taste of what to expect from the third seminar: Using the sensory room to help with regulation.

“Sensory rooms are used in lots of different ways – for relaxation, for education or as a treat."

“As occupational therapists we can support staff and the individuals they work with to use sensory rooms for regulation, to get the user into a ‘just right’ state for function. That may mean learning, going shopping, being able to sit next to someone or being able to eat a meal. The equipment in the sensory room provides plenty of opportunities for this."

“At the OT Show seminar I will take people through the range of sensory equipment available to stimulate each of the senses from vision to sounds, smells and touch.”

These will include:

Vision - you can use these products to work with people who find their vision over or under arousing:

Touch - these products are of tactile interest:

Movement - you can use these products to work with people who seek movement:

“This seminar will provide attendees with the chance to learn about the latest sensory technology and how different products can be used to stimulate each of the senses. The session will run on both days at 3.30pm aboard the Experia sensory bus at Stand C63.”

Since qualifying in 1993, occupational therapist Sheena has specialised in complex disability, working in the UK and USA within the NHS, social services, education and in private practice. Sheena has primarily worked with children and young adults and is an expert on sensory integration therapy.
