Project overview
Project Type: Multi-Sensory Room
Location: Kuwait
Client: Al Hidaya Kindergarten
Sector: Early Years Education
Primary Users: Young children requiring additional sensory support
Introduction
Early childhood education environments are designed to be active and engaging, helping young children explore the world through movement, sound and interaction.
For some children, particularly those who experience sensory processing differences, busy classroom environments can sometimes become overwhelming.
Al Hidaya Kindergarten introduced a dedicated sensory environment to support children who benefit from calm sensory experiences and structured sensory activities.
The sensory room provides a space where young learners can relax, explore sensory stimulation and develop confidence within a carefully designed environment.
The challenge
Young children often learn through sensory exploration. However, busy classroom environments can create sensory overload for some pupils.
The kindergarten wanted to introduce a dedicated sensory space that would support children who benefit from calming environments and structured sensory experiences.
The challenge was to design a sensory environment suitable for early years pupils while ensuring it remained safe, engaging and easy for staff to manage.
Experia design approach
Experia worked with the kindergarten to design a sensory environment suitable for young children.
The design focused on creating a safe and welcoming environment where children could explore sensory experiences through visual and tactile interaction.
Key considerations included:
• creating a calming environment suitable for early years pupils
• selecting sensory equipment that encourages exploration and engagement
• ensuring the space remains safe and accessible for young children
• designing a flexible environment that supports both relaxation and structured activities
The resulting space provides a controlled sensory environment that supports early childhood development.
Key sensory features
The sensory environment includes a range of elements designed to support sensory exploration and engagement.
Features include:
• bubble tube lighting creating gentle visual stimulation
• fibre optic lighting encouraging tactile exploration
• interactive sensory equipment supporting engagement and play
• soft seating areas creating comfortable spaces for relaxation
These elements create a balanced sensory environment suitable for early years pupils.
Before and after transformation
Before the installation, the kindergarten did not have a dedicated sensory environment where children could experience structured sensory activities.
The new sensory room provides a purpose-designed space where children can relax, explore sensory stimulation and develop confidence through sensory engagement.
The transformation demonstrates how sensory environments can support early childhood education.
How the space is used
The sensory room is used throughout the school day for a variety of activities including:
• calming sessions for pupils who benefit from sensory regulation
• sensory exploration activities
• small group sessions led by staff
• individual support sessions
Teachers are able to adapt the environment depending on the needs of the children using the space.
The outcome
The sensory environment has become an important resource within the kindergarten.
Children benefit from a calm space where they can relax and explore sensory experiences. Staff also benefit from having a dedicated environment that supports pupils who require additional sensory support.
The project highlights the value of sensory environments within early childhood education.
Experia perspective
“Sensory environments can play an important role in early years education. When designed carefully, they provide spaces where children can explore sensory experiences while also supporting relaxation and emotional regulation.”
