Not only is soft play a fantastic childhood activity for building and developing the proprioceptive and vestibular senses, but soft play for autism can help autistic people to relax and enjoy themselves.
However, public soft play centres can be overwhelming for those with autism – they’re often loud with voices and music, very bright, and full of people. Additionally, soft play may hold the same appeal for autistic teens and adults as for children, but these spaces are often less accessible for them. The solution? Create a designated space for autism sensory play and engagement!
Benefits of Soft Play for Autism
One of the key benefits of using soft play equipment when engaging in autism sensory play is safety – autistic people, particularly in childhood, often don’t have well-developed danger awareness which can make play hazardous, but with soft play, they can move and interact with equipment without the risk of injury.
Additionally, soft play is by its nature a sensory activity, often using colourful vinyl and tactile surfaces intended to grab, hold or touch.
See our previous blog post for an in-depth list of the benefits of sensory soft play.
Autism Sensory Play
Some of the different ways to engage an autistic person in sensory play include encouraging movement such as running, jumping, climbing, hopping, rolling and crawling.
Part of our range of sensory play for autism is our ball pits which also promote fine motor skills, throwing and catching. Sensory bins for autism are designed to be varied and help to engage the senses. We also have many multisensory products, such as the interactive keyboard and fibre optic Softie. These encourage users to engage more fully and can be used for both fun and calming!
