Distraction can be a powerful tool in helping distressed or overexcited users to calm down. Repetitive actions, such as threading toys, can focus the user's attention on that action, thereby distracting them from their heightened state of emotion.

• Sensory engagement

A vital component of sensory calming toys is their ability to engage the user's senses. Some can be particularly effective when paired with 'grounding' techniques, where an individual self-soothes by focusing on something in the environment around them.
