Project overview

Project type: Multi-sensory room
Location: Kuwait
Client: Al Riadah School
Sector: Special education
Primary users: Pupils with additional learning needs and sensory processing differences

Introduction

Schools supporting pupils with additional learning needs often recognise the importance of environments that allow students to regulate sensory input and engage with sensory experiences.

Al Riadah School in Kuwait introduced a dedicated sensory environment to support pupils who benefit from calm, structured sensory stimulation.

The sensory room provides a space where pupils can relax, explore sensory equipment and participate in sensory-based learning activities within a controlled environment.

The challenge

Many pupils experience sensory processing differences that can make busy school environments overwhelming.

Al Riadah School wanted to create a dedicated sensory space that would allow pupils to step away from classroom activity and experience a calming environment designed to support sensory regulation.

The challenge was to design a sensory environment that would support both relaxation and engagement while remaining flexible for a range of educational activities.

Experia design approachq

Experia worked with the school to design a sensory environment that supports both wellbeing and engagement.

The design focused on creating a calm space where pupils could explore sensory experiences safely while also allowing staff to deliver structured sensory activities.

Key considerations included:

• creating a relaxing sensory atmosphere
• selecting equipment that encourages interaction and exploration
• ensuring the environment is flexible for both individual and small group sessions
• supporting pupils who benefit from controlled sensory stimulation

The resulting environment provides a flexible sensory space that supports both educational and therapeutic activities.

Key sensory features

The sensory environment includes a range of elements designed to provide calming visual stimulation and interactive sensory experiences.

Features include:

• bubble tube lighting creating gentle visual movement
• fibre optic lighting encouraging tactile exploration
• interactive sensory equipment supporting engagement
• comfortable seating areas providing relaxation spaces

These elements create a balanced sensory environment suitable for pupils with a range of sensory needs.

Before and after transformation

Before the installation, the school did not have a dedicated sensory environment where pupils could experience structured sensory activities.

The new sensory room provides a purpose-designed space where pupils can relax, regulate sensory input and engage with sensory experiences.

The transformation demonstrates how sensory environments can support inclusive education.

How the space is used

The sensory room is used throughout the school day for a variety of activities including:

• calming sessions for pupils who benefit from sensory regulation
• structured sensory learning activities
• individual support sessions
• small group engagement activities

Teachers are able to adapt the environment depending on the needs of the pupils using the space

The outcome

The sensory environment has become an important part of the school’s approach to supporting pupils with additional needs.

Students benefit from having access to a calm environment where they can explore sensory experiences and regulate sensory input.

The project highlights how sensory environments can support inclusive education in international school settings.

Experia perspective

“Sensory environments can provide important support within schools that work with pupils who experience sensory processing differences. A carefully designed sensory space allows pupils to explore sensory experiences while supporting wellbeing and engagement.”
