Project overview
Project type: Dark Room Sensory Environment
Location: Kuwait
Client: Al Riadah School
Sector: Special Education
Primary users: Pupils with sensory processing differences and additional learning needs
Introduction
Schools supporting pupils with additional learning needs often create specialised environments that help students regulate sensory input and explore sensory experiences.
At Al Riadah School in Kuwait, a dedicated dark room environment was introduced to support pupils who benefit from low-light sensory experiences.
Dark rooms provide controlled lighting conditions that allow pupils to interact with illuminated sensory equipment in a calm and focused environment.
The challenge
Many pupils experience sensory processing differences that make it difficult to concentrate in bright or busy environments.
A dark room environment allows visual sensory equipment to stand out more clearly, helping pupils focus on specific sensory experiences without competing visual distractions.
Al Riadah School wanted to introduce a space where pupils could explore sensory equipment within a low-light environment designed to encourage calm engagement and visual focus.
Experia design approach
Experia worked with the school to design a dark room environment that supports sensory exploration within a controlled lighting environment.
The design focused on creating a low-light space where illuminated sensory equipment becomes the central focus of the environment.
Key considerations included:
• creating a darkened environment suitable for illuminated sensory equipment
• selecting sensory features that benefit from low-light conditions
• ensuring the space remains safe and accessible for pupils
• supporting both individual sessions and structured activities
The resulting environment allows pupils to explore sensory equipment in a focused and calming setting.
Key sensory features
Dark rooms are designed so that sensory equipment becomes more visually engaging within the low-light environment.
Features included in the space include:
• illuminated bubble tube lighting
• fibre optic lighting creating visual interaction
• glowing sensory elements designed for dark environments
• soft seating areas allowing pupils to relax while exploring sensory equipment
These features create a focused sensory experience where pupils can explore visual stimulation in a calm environment.
Before and after transformation
Before the installation, the school did not have a dedicated low-light sensory environment where pupils could explore illuminated sensory equipment.
The new dark room provides a specialised space where visual sensory features become the focus of the experience.
The transformation demonstrates how different types of sensory environments can support a wide range of sensory needs.
How the space is used
The dark room is used for a variety of sensory activities including:
• visual sensory exploration
• calming sessions for pupils who benefit from low stimulation
• structured sensory learning activities
• individual support sessions
Teachers and support staff can adapt the environment depending on the needs of the pupils using the space.
The outcome
The dark room has become an important part of the sensory provision at Al Riadah School.
Pupils benefit from a focused sensory environment where illuminated equipment can be explored without competing visual distractions.
The project highlights how specialised sensory environments can support pupils with different sensory needs.
Experia pespective
“Different sensory environments support different sensory needs. Dark rooms allow pupils to explore illuminated sensory equipment in a focused setting where visual stimulation can be carefully controlled.”
