Autism and Multi Sensory Rooms

Autism and Multi Sensory Rooms

Autism and Multi Sensory Rooms have a unique relationship. Our understanding of the world around us and motivation to engage in that world mainly depends upon our senses and their perception. Individuals with Autism have a unique perception of the world in which they live and it often does not translate well for them to function or live independently.

A multi sensory room or sensory environment can provide just the right sensory information that can be integrated even by, and particularly well by, those individuals with Autistic tendencies. In fact, it also benefits those on the spectrum, with sensory integration disorders and Alzheimer as well. These unique environments with their monitored lighting, selected auditory systems and special furniture, provide just the perfect space for development, interaction, social skills, communication skills and thought processes. Limitations on movement, hearing, processing and behavior are not an interference in a room that allows someone to perceive without performance.

Some benefits to those on the Autism Spectrum include:

  • Focus
  • Attention
  • Awareness
  • Coordination
  • Security
  • Socialization
  • Awareness
  • Concentration
  • Cause and Effect

A few tips to keep in mind when setting up a sensory room:

  • One or two clients or students in your room at a time with a facilitator is ideal
  • 20-30 minute sessions daily or regularly works best
  • Taking shoes off will keep your room cleaner, more hygienic and create more calm
  • Facilitators should be trained
  • Equipment should be selected with the help of a company or professional who understands sensory room set up

Remember, this is not a goal-oriented room. It is a room about processes, journey and self directed interaction. Yet, the affects can be astonishing.
