At Experia we realise the importance of Educational Values when designing our Sensory Rooms and equipment. We have teamed up with our own OT Jessica Brown to bring you this new Educational Value of Sensory Room Equipment series.
This initial post looks at Shape Recognition, Number Recognition and Colour Recognition in more detail.
Shape recognition is the ability to visually and cognitively recognise different shapes. For some, recognising and learning shapes is challenging. The use of sensory room equipment can make this more interactive and fun and help in the process of learning to recognise and name different shapes. For example, different shapes can be projected onto the wall with our projectors and identified. What a fun way to start learning about shapes!
Number recognition is the ability to visually and cognitively recognise numbers. For some, recognising and learning numbers is challenging. The use of sensory room equipment can make this more interactive and fun and help in the process of learning to recognise and name different numbers. Most of our sensory room equipment is controlled by a panel that has switches that are in different colours and can be marked with different numbers. To make the sensory equipment work the number asked has to be recognised and pressed and they are then rewarded with an immediate response as the bubble tube or fibre optic will turn on and/or change colour! What a fun way to start learning about numbers!
Colour recognition is the ability to visually and cognitively recognise different colours and there are beautiful arrays of them! For some, recognising and learning the names of different colours is challenging. The use of sensory room equipment can make this more interactive and fun and help in the process of learning to recognise and name different colours. Most of our sensory room equipment is controlled by a panel that has switches that are in different colours. When you press the coloured switch on the panel you can make our bubble tube or fibre optic change to that colour! What a fun way to start learning about colour recognition!
