Project overview
Project Type: Multi-Sensory Room
Location: Chichester, United Kingdom
Client: Portfield Primary School
Sector: Primary Education / SEND Support
Primary Users: Pupils with additional learning needs and sensory processing differences
Introduction
Portfield Primary School in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, supports pupils with a wide range of learning needs. Like many schools, staff recognised that some pupils benefit from environments that provide calming sensory experiences and opportunities for sensory exploration.
To support pupils who benefit from sensory input and structured sensory activities, the school introduced a dedicated multi-sensory room.
The new environment provides a space where pupils can relax, regulate sensory input and participate in sensory-based learning sessions.
The challenge
Some pupils at Portfield Primary School experience sensory processing differences that can make busy classroom environments challenging.
The school wanted to introduce a sensory environment that would allow pupils to step away from the classroom when needed and engage with calming sensory experiences.
The challenge was to design a room that could support both relaxation and structured sensory activities while remaining simple for staff to manage during the school day.
Client perspective
“Portfield School were impressed with the care and commitment that Experia displayed when designing and developing our sensory room. Experia listened carefully to staff to ensure that the design enabled our aims to be achieved with equipment that can engage, motivate and challenge children in new and exciting ways. Pupils will be able to develop their communication, independence and physical skills in a fun and creative environment. Experia also provided excellent training for staff and ensured all equipment was fully functioning before they left the site. Well done Experia!”

Experia design approach
Experia worked with the school to design a multi-sensory environment that could support pupils with a range of sensory needs.
The design focused on creating a calming and engaging space where pupils could explore sensory experiences safely.
Key considerations included:
• creating a relaxing environment separate from busy classroom spaces
• selecting sensory equipment that encourages interaction and exploration
• ensuring the room supports both individual sessions and small group activities
• designing a space that staff can easily adapt to different pupil needs
The result is a flexible sensory environment that supports both wellbeing and learning.
Key sensory features
The sensory room includes a range of elements designed to create calming visual stimulation and interactive experiences.
Features include:
• bubble tube lighting providing gentle visual movement
• fibre optic lighting encouraging exploration and engagement
• interactive sensory equipment supporting sensory learning
• comfortable soft seating areas for relaxation
These elements combine to create an environment where pupils can regulate sensory input and explore sensory experiences in a controlled setting.
Before and after transformation
Before the installation, the school did not have a dedicated sensory environment where pupils could experience structured sensory activities.
The new sensory room provides a purpose-designed space where pupils can relax, regulate sensory input and participate in sensory learning sessions.
The transformation demonstrates how sensory environments can enhance learning and wellbeing within primary school settings.
How the space is used
The sensory room is used throughout the school day for a variety of activities including:
• calming sessions to support sensory regulation
• structured sensory learning activities
• individual support sessions
• small group engagement activities
Teachers and support staff can adapt the environment depending on the needs of the pupils using the space.
The outcome
The sensory room has become an important part of the school environment.
Pupils benefit from a calm and engaging space where they can relax and explore sensory experiences. Staff also benefit from having a dedicated environment that supports pupils who benefit from sensory regulation.
The project highlights how sensory environments can support wellbeing and engagement within primary education.
Experia perspective
“Schools increasingly recognise the importance of providing environments that support pupils’ sensory needs. A well-designed sensory room can make a significant difference to pupil wellbeing and engagement.”

How the project was funded
This project was made possible through impactful charitable funding led by Lord's Taverners, a UK-based organisation dedicated to empowering young people facing disadvantage or disability through sport and recreation. Through their grant programme—supported by additional backing from BT—funding is directed toward initiatives that create inclusive opportunities, build confidence, and develop life skills. BT’s involvement helps amplify the reach of these grants, enabling larger-scale, meaningful investments in specialist equipment and environments. In this case, a £25,000 award provided the resources needed to deliver a transformative sensory space, demonstrating how strategic partnerships between charities and corporate supporters can drive lasting, tangible impact for young people with complex needs.
“I’m proud of Experia being part of another brilliant sensory project, all made possible by Lord’s Taverners and BT’s generous funding. It gives me great pleasure knowing that our sensory specialists and designers have had such a positive influence in helping the children develop their communication, basic numeracy and literacy skills and emotional and social responses.”
